Often, we receive emails, calls and letters from concerned individuals investigating hair restoration centers such as PAI Medical. From all these inquires and questions we have built our frequently asked questions sections, testimonials and some of the articles on the we grow hair blog. In the dialog below, Chris L. is asking about some of his options in dealing with genetic hair loss (hereditary as it were) and what options are available for him. As with most, Chris is a little concerned about the cost. (Real correspondence via Email)

Micheal,

I have a question for you. I am considering using the five step product you have in your office. I can’t remember the name of the product, but I think it was around $1200 for a year supply. According to the pictures you showed us, it will help thicken my hair. Is this a temporary fix, or is this a permanent fix? If the hair on the top of my head is genetically programmed to fall out, it would seem that this will just prolong the disappointing outcome of it falling out. If it does thicken up my hair, and I have the rest filled in later with a lesser amount of transplants than we discussed?

If the hair I thicken with that product falls out later after a lesser transplant, can we schedule another transplant to fill in the first one? The thing is, I am having a hard time with the idea of spending that kind of money all at once for something so selfish as feeling good because of a full head of hair. I really want a full head, don’t get me wrong, but $8,000 is a lot to spend for something like this. It almost seems selfish to me. I think I would have a lot easier time with it if it were broke into three or four smaller sums of money. If you have any suggestions, please let me know.

Thank you so much for your time,

Chris L.

Chris,

Good to hear from you. Yes, treatments are to help control future hair loss. If you stop using them, your hair loss will re-start. With the EXT Hair Treatment Program, we recommend the patient use the entire program for a year and then just the dietary supplement to help control any future loss so it is not as involved after the first year.

However, some patients just do more transplants as they continue to lose their hair. The transplanted hair is considered permanent so you’re adding good healthy hair to the area each time you do one.

Regarding the guilty feeling you are having - I did too. It is something each of us has to wrestle with. I felt like having my hair restored would help me professionally and socially. I knew I’d feel better about myself with more hair and that would positively impact everything I did and everyone I came in contact with. After the hair transplant, I realized I was exactly right. It has opened doors for me many times. Ironically, most patients tell me the same thing after their procedures.

As for breaking it up into smaller procedures, you can do that but you’ll invest more money in total that way. I think you’d be better off setting up a comfortable payment plan and getting as much done as you can at a time. Financing a level 8 would run about $204.00 a month and a 12 about $262.35.
