Doctor or Technician: Who is Doing Your Hair Transplant?

Did you know that in many states, including Tennessee, some clinics are substituting licensed surgeons for non-licensed hair transplant technicians who may have little or no experience? Does this concern you? We think it should!

4 Critical Steps That Require a Medical Doctor

At We Grow Hair / PAI Medical Group, our licensed surgeons are the primarily responsible for each and every step during a hair transplant procedure. Plus, you’ll benefit from an entire skilled medical team as well.

Administering Medication

The patient is sedated with relaxing medication and pain management throughout and after the procedure.
Medication is individualized based on:

  • Body weight
  • Age
  • Existing Medications
  • Complications

Caution to Patients

Poor execution could result in patient discomfort.

Harvesting Hair

Hair is harvested from the donor area, which is a limited and valuable resource.

  • Both FUE and MUHG harvesting involves incisions in the skin.
  • Over harvesting should be avoided to prevent gaps in donor area.
  • Follicle transection (destruction) must be avoided.
  • Harvesting must be taken from the DHT resistant donor area only.

Caution to Patients

Poor Execution could result in infection, follicle destruction, or patchy thin areas in both the donor and the recipient areas. It could also result in unsightly scars and limit future hair transplants.

Recipient Site Creation

Sites are created for future hair.  This involves hundreds/thousands of paper thin incisions.

  • Correct Incision angles are critical
  • Incisions must not be too close together, too far apart, too deep or too shallow.
  • Follicle transection (destruction) must be avoided.
  • Transplantation in the crown must follow a spiral pattern
  • The number of incisions are derived from a mathematical equation based on each individual patient.

Caution to Patients

Poor Execution could result in infection, uneven results, thin results and follicle destruction.

Hair Placement

New hairs are placed in the incisions established during site creation.

  • Hair must be placed in the right direction and angle.
  • Sometimes more sites must be created to accommodate additional hair.
  • The entire process should be monitored by a licensed surgeon.

Caution to Patients

Poor execution could result in infection, improperly placed hairs, follicle destruction or complete failure to implant.
