Alopecia simply means ‘loss of hair’ or baldness. More importantly,[...]
“Michael, it’s like magic. I came in to see you guys… Four months later, they started to grow in!”
“Michael, it’s like magic. I came in to see you guys, you took thousands of hair seeds from the back and sides of my head, where I had more than I needed, and you moved them to the front and top where I really needed them. Four months later, they started to grow in!” A year after his hair transplant procedure, the balding, thinning hair on the top of this patient’s head is forever gone, filled in with his own hair, regrown in the areas needed most. He was amazed at the results, and you can be too!
Little hairs from the hair transplant are harvested over a four to five hour procedure and then ‘transplanted’ to the thinning areas. The hair seeds that are planted then go dormant for a few months before beginning to gradually grow. It takes a full year before all the little seeds produce hairs and grow in. One of the things most people don’t realize and are amazed about is how gradual the improvement is. As a patient myself, I understand their amazement. I was glad my hair grew in gradually. It made it more natural and didn’t draw attention. My mother and a very few people close to me knew I had it done, but that was all. Other people that I saw from time-to-time had no idea. If you think about it, people don’t lose their hair over the course of a week or two, so it would be odd if all their hair grew back that quickly.
To illustrate how gradual and natural the hair grows in, take a look at the patient below. During his procedure in 2008, we transplanted over 6,500 permanent hair seeds from the back and sides of his head to the front and top where he was beginning to recede and thin. Within three months, he started noticing some of the hairs beginning to grow. By five months, it was enough to start to style and cover the bald spots. By 12 months, the area was filled in.
As a business professional, this client wanted to keep a polished professional appearance. He told me that when he meets with prospective and existing clients, it is important that he looks successful. “Michael, as a businessman, people judge how successful you are by how you dress and look,” he said. “Having hair loss made me feel like I wasn’t looking my best and I didn’t want it to negatively affect my business success.” Additionally, he added, “When I was with my children and their friends, I’d get the comment ‘dad, you’re going bald.’ They’d poke fun at my balding head, and that got old. So, I decided that those days were going to come to an end.”
Hair transplants today are vastly different than the old “hair plugs” that were common 15 years ago. Back then, 12 to 20 hairs were placed into a small hole. The doctor would then move over ¼ inch and place another hole with 12 to 20 hairs in it, transplanting these large clusters of hairs in “rows.” The results were what we know today as the Doll’s Hair Head. The hair grew in and looked like a doll’s hair. Not natural! There was a shift away from this approach and micro grafts were developed. A micro graft is one hair transplanted into one hole. This dramatically changed the look of the hair transplant to an undetectable result. Today, a modern hair transplant looks natural and normal. No one should be able to look at a you and tell you’ve had a hair transplant.
The patient below had an old hair plug procedure. We conducted only two corrective procedures to naturalize his hairline and increase the overall volume of his hair to match the back and sides.
